Side effects when wearing glasses for the first time

Author: 6neat

Eye defects are a very common condition in a large majority of the people. Sometimes they are so negligible that one can go a lifetime without realising that there is something the matter with their eyes.
The most common eye defects are hyperopia, myopia and astigmatism. The correct functioning of the eye involves the cornea and lens forming an image on the retina. However when there is a defect in the eye, the image is not formed on the retina. It is either formed in front of the retina or behind the retina. In astigmatism, the shape of the cornea is different and is not smooth. This can lead to the image being all blurred.
The simplest way of correcting these eye defects is the use of glasses. Glasses are simple devices using glass/plastic lenses that help in focussing the image onto the retina thus producing a clear image.
Most people realise they need glasses when they suffer from constant eye strain and headaches. The best option here is to go to the ophthalmologist and get an eye check done. This will help identify the specific problem and help decide the type of glasses needed.
But like anything that is new, there too exist side effects when wearing glasses for the first time. To begin with, first time wearers will report headaches and dizziness when wearing their glasses. This is normal because the eyes are getting used to a new way of focussing and this can lead to a little strain. The best way to deal with this is to wear glasses for increasing periods of time to allow the eyes to get used to them.
Sometimes the headaches could be because the glasses are not the right prescription. This could increase the headaches and then a visit to the doctor is important.
Another side effect when wearing glasses for the first time is a change in the depth perception due to the eyes seeing out of another pair of lenses. This can lead to misreading the distance of objects or the depth of stairs which can lead to stumbling and tripping.
A side effect when wearing glasses for the first time is also discomfort around the ears and nose because of the frame of the glasses. First time wearers are not used to a weight, as light as it may be, on their nose. This can sometime be troublesome. If the glasses cut in too much it is suggested that the size of the frames be checked to see if the fit correctly.
These are some of the side effects when wearing glasses for the first time. Others are mainly related to being responsible for a new addition in your life, from keeping them clean to keeping them safe.
