Children's books on wearing glasses
Wearing glasses to improve your eyesight is universally accepted today. However, as much as everyone may understand the importance of wearing glasses, for children, wearing glasses is nothing short of punishment. This is not because they don't get how useful glasses are, but is because they don't want to be teased and bullied in school.
Children who wear glasses are often the butt of several cruel jokes in school. From being called four-eyes to specsy, children often get teased by other children. This teasing leads to children refusing to wear glasses. They may 'forget' their glasses at home, or not wear them once out of sight of their parents and in the school. They may even lose them or constantly break them to avoid wearing them.
What do parents do in such a situation?
Often at such times it helps to give the child role models.
Parents who also wear glasses can be role models for their children.
Otherwise, the best option to help children get comfortable with wearing glasses is to tell them stories in which the main character(s) where glasses or the story is about wearing glasses and how cool it is!
This helps because children often identify with stories they read and this has a strong impact on the children.
Keeping this mind, several authors who write stories for children have written children's books on wearing glasses. These books help children get comfortable with wearing glasses. A lot of these books have animals as main characters because children identify more with animals when it comes to behaviour and feelings.
One popular series of children's books on wearing glasses are The Arthur Books by Marc Brown. Arthur is also a cartoon character on BBC. The premise of the stories is that Arthur would not be the same person without his glasses.
Another children's book on wearing glasses is Monty, The Dog Who Wears Glasses by Colin West. In these short stories, Monty is given a pair of glasses by his owner and all his adventures are described. The stories are short and funny and appeal to children's humour.
Bumposaurus by Penny McKinlay is another children's book on wearing glasses. The story is about a short sighted dino and all the misadventures he gets into, ending eventually in him getting glasses.
Other children's books on wearing glasses are X-Ray Mabel and Her Magic Specs by Claire Fletcher, Dogs Don't Wear Glasses by Adrienne Geoghan, Winnie Flies Again by Korky Paula and Valerie Thomas, Luna and the Big Blur by Shirley Day, Glasses Who Needs 'Em? by Lane Smith, Magenta Gets Glasses by Deborah Reber etc. The list can go on and more are added everyday.
And if your child is still not convinced, all you have to do is get them Harry Potter, and remind them he too wears glasses!
